MASTERWORKS OF MINIMALISM FROM GUNTHER FORG

On July 12, 2008, Zane Bennett Contemporary Art will celebrate its Grand Opening at 435 South Guadalupe Street in Santa Fe with a major showing of paintings from the European minimalist master Gunther Forg. Since the Seventies, Forg has been a tremendously influential figure in the European art scene. His canvases and installations, employing multiple objects and materials, from linen to copper to lead, frequently blur the lines between painting, photography, and sculpture. They also deliberately obscure the boundaries between viewer and art. “He is forever moving from one form of expression to the other and back again,” the European critic Beatrice Parent writes, “so as to set up a sort of dialogue between them, in which what specifies the one makes it possible to understand the other.”

Forg’s work has been exhibited across the globe and is in major museums from Amsterdam to Tokyo. His list of solo exhibitions runs to two pages. But this will be his first major show in Santa Fe.

“There is no better way to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Zane Bennett Contemporary Art gallery than with the work of Gunther Forg,” says Sandy Zane, the owner and director of Zane Bennett Contemporary Art. “He is exactly the kind of contemporary artist we will be showing now and in the future. He’s brilliant. His work is exceptional. We are proud to be able to present this caliber of work to collectors and the people of Santa Fe and beyond.”

Gunther Forg, the show, opens on July 12, 2008, with a celebration at the new Zane Bennett Contemporary Art gallery in the Railyard District of Santa Fe. Dignitaries from the civic and arts communities will be in attendance. This will be a significant event in the 2008 summer arts scene in Santa Fe.
