Click on any photo to the left to see a larger image of his work JOSHUA ROSE “Full Circle” The circle: symbol of the Sun, the Moon, of geometric perfection, Western rationalism, Eastern mysticism, the cycle of life, eternal love; the enclosure of the heart, simplicity and spontaneity, the Zen symbol "supreme," a mirror, the universe, all and nothing, a zero, a wheel, the wheel, enlightenment itself, etc. The circle exhibits both the simplest stroke of a brush and the most complex, all encompassing set of possibilities set into motion. It is ancient and current, full and empty, spectacular and nothing special. The child draws a circle and augments it with eyes, hair, legs and arms to create a person. A Zen Master paints a circle, an Enso, to demonstrate a depth of understanding. The moon when full does nothing at all. I use the circle as a vehicle to carry with it all of the competing notions and ideas of both clarity and confusion that populate my world. It is a way of stating something definitive and speculative, active and passive, a question and an answer all at the same time. It allows me to do this while paying honor to all the other possible uses and users of the circle even as I try to make it mine.
