Gail Gash Taylor

Gail Gash Taylor (b. 1951, Illinois) has created paintings and prints for over five decades. Her printmaking practice pays keen attention to textures. By emphasizing small details in her depicted repetitive patterns, the artist recalls the visual language of her photorealist painting practice. Gash Taylor’s Dawn Suite series was inspired by a collection of prints depicting Mount Fuji from the collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. She discovered these works while in graduate school and remarks, “I knew I wanted to create a suite about the changes in the sky. Capturing the slight variation and the subtleties were important to me. The prints slowly get lighter when you line the entire suite up. The cheesecloth clouds shift slowly. These prints represent such a wonderful time in my life; it’s sad but beautiful.”

Gail Gash Taylor holds a BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University, an MS from Illinois State University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. In 1983, she was honored with a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, among other awards throughout her career. More than fifty public institutions collect Gash Taylor’s art, including the Portland Art Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art and Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art (Italy). The artist lives and work in Santa Fe.
