Ellen Berkenblit
Large Stripe Ribbon, 2021
Six color lithograph with glitter element on antique white Somerset velvet paper
29 7/8 x 39 7/8 in
75.7 x 101.3 cm
Glamorous women abound in Ellen Berkenblit’s candy-colored, gestural compositions—but don’t call them sweet. Though she adorns her subjects with traditionally feminine signifiers, their expressions tell another story. In Large Stripe Ribbon, the New York-based painter and printmaker tightly frames the face of a woman with blond highlights, long lashes and a dazzling hairclip. It’s her intense stare that holds our attention: this artwork is staring right back at the world.
Berkenblit was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2014, and her work is in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Large Stripe Ribbon, completed at the Tamarind Institute in 2021, is a brand new addition to her playful but challenging oeuvre.
