This seven-color lithograph by artist Diego Romero (Cochiti Pueblo) is significant for its heroic depiction of the artist’s own wife, Cara Romero (Chemehuevi). Encircled by traditional Pueblo designs, Cara (who is a formidable artist in her own right) strikes a pose as a Native Wonder Woman in classic comic book style. The pottery aesthetic references Romero’s ceramic art practice, which is equally engaged in representing contemporary Pueblo life and Indigenous history, often interlaced with pop culture narratives and elevated to Olympian status.
