Drawn from photographs the artist took of fossiliferous limestone during visits to the Mojave Desert, "Terra Niobrara" is about the ancient warm shallow seas that formed the inland Western Interior Seaway that connected the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean for 34 million years during the late Cretaceous period. A combination of regional uplift, sediment influx, tectonic activity, and mountain building (Laramide orogeny) led to the gradual regression and eventual disappearance of the Niobrara.
