Miniature bronze casts of Bello’s arms and hands, as if in an embrace, sit on black sand that comes from the beach near the house where she grew up in Davao City, Philippines. The left forearm bears a scar which spells "PUTOL," which means “cut,” “chop,” or “truncation.” Bello has borne the figurative scar since the late 1980s when her family permanently left Davao, first for Manila then through the subsequent decades of her life in the U.S.
