Native artist Jaune Quick-To-See Smith draws on characters and iconography from Salish and Cree-Chippewa-Ojibwe creation stories in her ambitious six color lithograph Trade Canoe: A Western Fantasy. The body of her work uses recurring motifs and themes from Indigenous cultures in order to confront and dismantle Western hegemonic narratives. In Trade Canoe, Quick-To-See Smith creates a timeless artwork that weaves together allegorical and stereotypical figures and narratives from Native and Western histories under swaths of vivid color and frenetic brushwork.
