Expand your print collection with the experimental work of Color Field artist Sam Gilliam. Ichi and Two are crafted with handmade paper and stitched together beautifully with bold and vibrant threading, making the back of the print as interesting as the front. The artist has patch worked pieces together, creating an extraordinary sense of dimensionality to both works. Each of the prints are composed of serigraph, monotype-giving the prints the fluidity of paint- and other various handwork, making both Ichi and Two very special. These prints are brilliant examples of the innovation of the beloved artist. Gilliam has always been one to think outside of the two-dimensional, his signature Drape paintings came from an unlikely source of inspiration, a clothingline. The artist removed the concept of a frame completely and chose to drape his paintings, though the content of the painting remains the same the folds and light are always shifting, a unique element that has continued to intrigue throughout the years.
For the past five decades Sam Gilliam has persistently created beautiful and genre defying work. His experimentation throughout his career has established him as an innovator, expanding and reinventing the possibilities of the Color Field. Gilliam was raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisville in 1955 and completed his MFA in 1961. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1962, where he continues to live and work. Gilliam has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
