David Hare (B.1917-D.1992) was an American surrealist painter and sculptor. "Elephant in Violets" represents one of roughly a dozen prints Hare completed at Tamarind Institute during the 70s and 80s while working in the southwest. Hare's unique blend of surrealism and abstraction creates an enigmatic work that uses line and form to dive into the duality of the human psyche: our desire to understand and our ultimate inability to know.
