Originally painted on deerskin, the Chickasaw Map of 1723 is an important visual of Chickasaw history as it illustrates how the world was viewed by their ancestors. "The Chickasaw Map II" blanket is an artistic interpretation of the outlines of waterways, trade routes, and the relationships with other tribes at the time. The Chickasaw people depended on their experiences and memories for the coordinates of what lay beyond the southeast region. This map, coveted by colonists, is attributed to Fani’ Minko’ (Squirrel Leader or Squirrel King), a Chickasaw warrior and leader.
