I : 11
Two Variants closely related, (a) through their color temperature (warm particularly on the right), and (b) through the same underlying design scheme.
All Variant schemes are built on checkerboards, in order to measure the exact quantity of each color used. Both prints show equal proportional reduction. Notice that the underlying unit for all parts is one half inch square. (For practical reasons measure the Variant at the right.)
The whole composition measures 11½ × 16 inches, which is equal to 23 × 32 units (height first). That means that the entire surface covers 736 units.
Find out whether the following statements for the single colors are correct: The center color (orange) covers 92 units; the next color is exactly equal, that is, also 92; the third color (red-orange) measures one unit more, which is 93 units; and the enclosing fourth color (red) one unit less, 91 units. All four figures 92, 92, 93, 91 add up to 368 units which is exactly half of the entire surface. This leaves the same amount to the fifth color, the surrounding brown.
But please don’t overlook the very obvious interaction of the fifth color.
