Chinese artist Zhang Xioagang is celebrated for his surreal portraiture adapted from a monochrome archive of family photos from China’s Cultural Revolution. This work, titled My Daughter, captures the hazy appearance of a young girl with doll-like eyes and a red mark on her face. The painting is imbued with a dream-like quality, inspired by Xiaogang’s interest in Surrealism and history. In the oddities of these portraits, Xiaogang examines themes of otherness and identity during a period of great cultural change.
