On Saturday, 5 September, 2–3 p.m., join artists Chanelle Gallagher (Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe) and Victoria Hubbard (Mescalero Apache) as they discuss the weight of history, the challenges of our present moment, and the cosmology of time embedded in their respective artworks featured in Sunrise and Flint: Contemporary Native American Art. From Hubbard’s monumental panel of painted canvases stitched together to memorialize stolen and damaged lands to Gallagher’s relational work of waabigan (clay) and ishkode (fire), this talk will contextualize resistance to the erasure of Indigenous peoples, their culture, memories, narratives, and trajectories. Framed by former U.S. poet laureate Joy Harjo's vision of hope and renewal expressed in her poem "The Everlasting," this talk imagines how the shadows of history may be illuminated by the light of contemporary artists, thereby reconciling the past with the future.
