Overview

Anish Kapoor (b. 1954, India) is regarded as one of the most distinguished British-Indian artists of his generation. Kapoor is well-known for his intense—almost spiritual—outdoor and indoor site-specific works. His sculptures marry a modernist sense of pure materiality with a fascination for the manipulation of form and the perception of space. Expanding upon formal minimalistic precepts, the artist’s work catches the viewer’s attention with rich colors, sensuously refined surfaces and optical effects of depth and dimension.

Kapoor received his formal art education at Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art and Design. In 1990, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and was awarded the Turner Prize that following year. His five decade-long career has been awarded with numerous accolades, including the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Praemium Imperiale, the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Genesis Prize. Kapoor’s large-scale sculptures are installed in public venues around the world, including Cloud Gate (Millennium Park, Chicago), Earth Cinema (Pollino National Park, Italy) and Sky Mirror (Wellington Circus, England). In addition to these installations, Kapoor’s work can be found in distinguished institutions, notably in the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Prada Art Foundation (Milan), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao) and Israel Museum (Jerusalem).
