Having conducted research on tribes with strong women for a series called "Matriarchal Tribes," Wheeler designed "Cheyenne Buffalo Woman" in honor of the Cheyenne Warrior Women’s Society.
The dress and belt are handwoven in cotton with inlaid design in the summer winter pattern that is echoed in the beadwork pattern on the headdress. Wheeler purchased the hide from a buffalo farmer and had the yarn spun from the buffalo hair in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
