As one of the most celebrated postwar artists of his time, Robert Motherwell altered the landscape of abstract expressionism through his emotionally charged works and singular style. This print series, titled French Revolution Bicentennial Suite, is a departure from his better known wall paintings, but nonetheless retains his gestural technique. The American artist overlays symbolic images and colors pertaining to the French Revolution. Much like his famed Elegies to the Spanish Republic, Motherwell draws from great conflicts in history and memorializes them through his evocative work.
