Sigue Pasando Por Aquí surveys recent works by Austin-based printmaker and educator Enrique Figueredo. Born in Venezuela and raised in the United States, Figueredo explores complicated notions of alienation and belonging in an image-saturated culture through experiments in relief printmaking and immersive installation. "The show is a literal and conceptual centrifuge, tumbling together complex experiences of timekeeping, placemaking, globalization and hybridization," says Gallery Director Jordan Eddy.

Enrique Figueredo uses the layered language of printmaking to map the fractured edges of cultural and political paradigms. Through kinetic and iterative action, Figueredo challenges viewers to consider the cyclical nature of human history that alternately sparks and subverts revolution.

Viajes de la Gran Flota Blanca, 2023

The viewers of Viajes de la Gran Flota Blanca encounter a monumental zoetrope, six-and-a-half feet tall and fifteen feet wide. The Victorian-era machine represents the induction and visualization of circular time—or the eternal return, the repetitions of history, and the mixing of the past, present, and future once history is recorded.

"This woodcut spawned from a camping trip in the badlands of the Four Corners region of northwestern New Mexico. The figures and landscape are inspired by the million-year-old hoodoo rock formations of the area. These monoliths drink invaluable spermaceti from a sperm whale that lies on a seabed, combining the region’s present-day topography with its past as an ocean floor." -EF

"While meditating on the erasure of identity that occurs when embracing European symbols, I created griffins for use in South America. Riffing on the decorative motif that was popular in Medieval Europe, I swapped the lion-eagle chimera with anatomical elements of a macaw and a jaguar—animals native to the Americas. The reverse side of the block, which depicts the silhouette of the creature, was carved to embody the spirit of the griffin." -EF
Pasó Por Aquí Series, 2022

"Figueredo pairs detailed woodcuts of New Mexico’s mission churches with rubbings of Spanish colonial graffiti and bark beetle-infested trees. These narratives of invasion and destruction seem analogous until you consider the beetles’ status as climate refugees driven from Central America to the United States. The insects are thus victims of the long tail of colonialism, even as they echo colonial narratives by ravaging native forests and dominating local insect populations." -JE

Enrique Figueredo

Enrique Figueredo is a Venezuelan-American artist and educator whose work examines globalization, immigration, economics, and religion through the patterns, designs, motifs, and symbols associated with ancient civilizations, the colonization of the Americas, and mythology. Drawing on the disconnect between personal experience and established historical narratives, Figueredo cultivates a figurative space where communities may freely engage with history.

Figueredo lives in Austin, Texas, where he is an Assistant Professor in Printmaking at the University of Texas. He received his BFA from SUNY Purchase in 2004 and MFA at Rutgers University in 2019. Figueredo is the 2023 Artist in Residence at Flatbed Press and has additionally received the VCUarts Fountainhead Fellowship, the Nadine Goldsmith Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and other honors.
