Thank you for your interest in Danielle Orchard’s Utility!
Orchard’s practice revolves around female subjects and the “blending of art historical memory with lived experience.” Her paintings and prints meld the forms of twentieth-century modernism with the mood of twenty-first-century narratives.
In Utility we see a woman in the dark, speaking on the phone, and holding a flashlight. We can imagine contemporary circumstances that may lead her to this scenario – one of fear, need for comfort, and dependence on technology. Orchard depicts a wide range of similarly dramatized modern scenes by referencing chapters of Western art history, such as Cubism, the Italian Renaissance, the Chicago Imagists, and the Bay Area painters. She is drawn to past art historical movements that relied on the female figure to indicate an otherwise hidden psychological position. The viewer’s imagination fuels the narrative behind the subject’s psychology in Utility; however, no imagination is required to identify the clear artistic reference to Henri Matisse. When viewing the composition closely, Danielle’s hand becomes ever present in the loose brushstrokes of each line that connect to form the pictured protagonist.
Orchard holds an MFA from Hunter College and is represented by Jack Hanley Gallery in New York City. Recent exhibitions include Pack Den Badeanzug Ein at Galerie Kornfeld, A Little Louder, Love at Jack Hanley Gallery, Embodiment at D.C. Moore Gallery, and Fauve at Geoffrey Young Gallery.
