“One line plus one line results in many meanings."—Josef Albers
Formulation: Articulation showcases selected prints from Josef Albers’s landmark portfolio of the same name. Released in 1972, just four years before the artist’s death, Formulation: Articulation comprises 127 screenprints across sixty-six sheets, reflecting more than four decades of Albers’s sustained investigation into the relationship between color and optical perception. The portfolio contains an extensive range of color studies, including a total of seventeen double-sheet works from Albers’s infamous Homage to the Square series. Initially received with bemusement, today, Formulation: Articulation has gained acclaim as one of the most important visual compendia of color relationships in modern history. This exhibition presents selections from the milestone portfolio unlike any survey before it, with parings of prints selected for their vibrant dialogue and displayed for both close study and enjoyment in floating mounts.
