Opening during Constitution Week, artist, architect, and experimental preservationist Jorge Otero-Pailos's Capitol Collective reimagines the architectural plan as a painterly and generative medium. The exhibition brings together works based on the United States Capitol, the artist’s various residences, and the former U.S. Embassy in Oslo to explore the dynamic between architecture, belonging, collective memory, and identity. Moving between the intimate scale of home and the civic scale of the Capitol and embassy, Otero-Pailos reveals architectural plans as evolving records of lived experience, power, memory, and possibility. Extending his pioneering practice of experimental preservation into painting, Capitol Collective considers how the spaces we inhabit and the histories we choose to preserve are continually transformed by those who occupy, remember, and reimagine them.
